Yesterday evening, Phonte of the Foreign Exchange released his collaboration with Lil’ B The Based God, Jean Grae, and 9th Wonder, “Base For Your Face.”  On the 20th episode of his Gordon Gartrell Radio podcast with DJ Brainchild, Phonte explains how the collaboration came to be.

Phonte says he was at work on his upcoming solo rap record and wanted to have a feature that would make people say “WTF?” Lil’ B the Based God was one of the first people that came to mind.  Fast forward awhile later, and Phonte gets a call from 9th Wonder after they reconciled. 9th said he’d been talking with Lil’ B about working on a song.

“I was thinking about guests for my solo record, and I went through some of the usual suspects, cats that I usually f*ck with,” Phonte said. “But I was like ‘Man, I need that one wild card feature. That one feature that just comes out of nowhere.’ So I was thinking about Lil’ B.

“Top of the year comes and me and 9th reconcile.  So we’re on the horn the other day and he’s like ‘I talked to Lil’ B today.’ I said ‘N*gga you talked to Lil’ B the Based God???’ He said ‘Yes! I rapped with the Based God himself.’ We started talking, and he said that Lil’ B wanted to do some work and get it in. I said ‘Well let’s see what he’s talking about.’  Originally the track was just Lil’ B and 9th.  9th hit me two nights ago and said “I got the joint! What’s up?’ He sent it to me. I listened to it and said ‘If you really wanna do this, I should drop a verse on it.'”
