In 1853, the State Agricultural Society held the first State Fair (it was four days long). The largest attendance day had 4,000 fair goers.
A lot has changed since then. In 2010, a record 151,647 attended the fair on a warm Saturday evening.
Today, the gates open at 3 pm and stay open until midnight.
