ejogo-scott-king“Sparkle” actress Carmen Ejogo was cast opposite David Oyelowo in “Selma.” Oyelowo will play the civil rights leader Martin Luther King while Ejogo takes a turn as King’s wife Coretta Scott King.

The film “Selma” follows the journey of black protestors who marched from Selma to the state’s capital Montgomery, Alabama in 1965 to gain voting rights. The march from Selma took place three times because the first two times, police beat the crowd back. However, the crowd’s numbers kept swelling each time they made the attempt to march to Montgomery.

Martin Luther King married Coretta Scott on June 18, 1953. She was just as much of a civil rights leader as her husband. Mrs. King was also an activist fighting alongside of her husband for the civil rights of minorities through peaceful demonstrations. When Martin Luther King was assassinated in 1968, Coretta Scott King continued to fight for our civil liberties.

“Selma” is being produced by Oprah Winfrey‘s Harpo production company and is being directed by Ava DuVernay. There is no official release date as of yet.
