Many of you may remember the shooting of 50-year-old Walter Scott, in Charleston, SC. If not, he was an unarmed black male who was fatally shot during a traffic stop, by Michael Slager. In a graphic video that later went viral, you could see Mr. Walter hurrying away while Slager fired a slew of shots in Walter Scott’s back. In the video you can also see Michael Slager placing an object beside Scott’s lifeless body. The item turned out to be the then officer’s taser, which he claimed Scott obtained during a scuffle between the two.
Today, the former police officer who shot Mr. Scott was sentenced to 20 years in federal prison. This comes after Slager took a plea deal, where he was sentenced under guidelines for second-degree murder. This prevented him from being sentenced with life.

Although, there has been many similar cases where no justice was served; we as a community are happy that some type of legal reparation was given. There is still a lot of work to be done in ensuring justice and equality in regards to police dealings. This is just the beginning, but it is nice to see that another police officer didn’t get to kill a black person without consequences.
