A restaurant owner posted a demeaning Facebook message on Martin Luther King Jr. Day, playing into the racially charged stereotype of African Americans liking fried chicken and waffles with watermelon. The move sparked complaints about "outright" racism.

Shots rang out around 3:40 p.m. at Martin Luther King Jr. Memorial Park in Miami, where thousands were gathered to celebrate the Civil Rights icon's legacy.

During the event, actors, activists, and musicians will pay homage to Dr. King with recitations of his most revered speeches, as well as musical performances.
