Before the world fell in love with Selena Gomez, there was another Latina singer, in which Gomez was named after, who stole our hearts: Selena.

Selena Quintanilla-Perez was only 23 when her life was taken in a hotel parking lot. The date was March 31, 1995 — exactly 20 years ago today.

She was killed by the president of her fan club, Yolanda Saldívar.

Selena’s father, Abraham expressed to the Associated Press that although his family recognizes the tremendous support Selena has received, his family has never been a part of organizing them. “We remember our daughter every single day. We don’t need a special day to remember her.

Several celebrations are scheduled to take place in her hometown of Texas. According to the Dallas Observer, Latino communities prefer to celebrate the lives of their lost souls rather than to mourn their death.

Selena, gained worldwide recognition from her hit song “Dreaming of You,” and is known as one of the first to take Tejano music mainstream.

Years later, Selena’s presence still has a huge impact on the hearts of millions. So today we celebrate her legacy.
