TENNIS-FRA-OPEN-PEOPLE

Today, the world’s light got a little dimmer as news spread of Prince’s death. There’s no way this round-up was going to be about anything other than one of the greatest musicians to ever walk this planet. So, you should kick back, relax, and enjoy some great words in honor of a legend.

Marky Mark at The Smoking Section put together a short list of rap songs that sampled Prince’s music. It’s great to see the impact of Prince’s music and how it transcended genres and generations. “You don’t need me to say Prince was important and just how big his impact was. You live, you’re on planet earth, therefore you should know.”

Our very own Managing Editor, Jada Gomez, shared some heartfelt thoughts on Prince’s passing. It’s a definite must read.

“In first grade, I was the kid who loved Prince more than Michael. My friends would say I was totally crazy. Did you see him literally transform into a panther in “The Way You Make Me Feel?” That’s some competition when it comes to recess convo. But I’d argue that Prince wrote, produced and performed all of his music, even played all of the instruments. Just look at the liner notes of any of his albums. Although my generation continued to rock with both MJs (and I thought they were pretty cool, too), Prince was my man.”

Andrew Gruttadaro at Complex wrote about the masterpiece of Purple Rain.

“I don’t know that I can write about the performances—which were filmed live—in Purple Rain in a way that will do them justice. Every image is iconic. Haunting. Cathartic. The way Prince turns a love song into a threat when he asks Apollonia, “What’s it gonna be, baby?” in “The Beautiful Ones,” as a synthesizer howls in the distance; the lighting and choreography of the breakdown in “Computer Blue”; Prince vibrating on a raised platform, a black mask covering his eyes, along to the climax of “Darling Nikki”; the first chords of “Purple Rain,” the repeating riff of Prince’s guitar solo, and the twinkling of the keys as Prince rushes from the stage to his dressing room, and back again.”
