An FDA recall on Lay’s potato chips that was originally issued in December has been upgraded to its highest risk level.

The original recall was issued in mid December, with more than 6,000 bags of classic potato chips were removed from the shelves in Washington and Oregon. The ingredient that was identified as the problem was “undeclared milk. This poses a risk to those with severe sensitivities or allergies.

On Jan 27, the FDA upgraded the recall to “Class 1,” which is their most severe. This means that the use of, or exposure to, a violative product will cause serious adverse health consequences or even death. As of now, the trained potato chips have only been distributed within the Washington and Oregon area.

No sicknesses or deaths from the chips has been reported. Frito-Lays says to discard the recalled ships immediately if you purchased them, especially consumers who “have an allergy or sensitivity to milk.” Some symptoms of a milk allergy can include:

  • Hives
  • Wheezing
  • Itching or tingling feeling around the lips or mouth
  • Swelling of the lips, tongue, or throat
  • Coughing or shortness of breath
  • Vomiting
