August is National Wellness Month, a time dedicated to prioritizing self-care, reducing stress, and trying healthy habits that support your physical and mental well-being. While many people celebrate by starting a new workout routine or spending more time outdoors, I decided to step outside my comfort zone and try something completely different: pole fitness.

It’s a Workout… and Then Some

If you’ve never tried a pole fitness class, don’t let social media fool you.

What looks graceful and effortless actually requires an incredible amount of upper-body strength, core stability, balance, flexibility, and coordination. Even learning a basic spin or hold takes more strength than you might expect.

After just one class, I had a newfound respect for anyone who makes it look easy.

Pole fitness has become increasingly popular as an alternative to traditional gym workouts because it combines cardio, strength training, flexibility, and dance into one workout. Many participants also say it helps build confidence while providing a fun, supportive environment to stay active.

For me, it wasn’t about being perfect. It was about trying something new.

National Wellness Month is all about challenging yourself to build healthier habits, and sometimes that means saying yes to experiences that make you a little nervous.

Wellness Doesn’t Have to Be Boring

Not everyone enjoys running on a treadmill or lifting weights.

One of the biggest takeaways from my experience is that wellness looks different for everyone. Maybe your thing is yoga. Maybe it’s pickleball, hiking, cycling, dancing, or taking a daily walk.

The best workout is often the one you’ll actually stick with. If you’ve been looking for a sign to try that fitness class you’ve been putting off, let National Wellness Month be your excuse.
