beyonce-walmart

International pop star, Beyoncé, is full of surprises this holiday season! First, she randomly drops her fifth studio album last Friday, the 13th (which hit #1 in over 100 countries), and now, she’s taking over Santa’s job.

The 17- time Grammy winner dropped by Walmart yesterday (Dec. 20th) in  Tewksbury, Mass. and gifted 750 shoppers with a $50 gift card. Do the math – Beyoncé dropped over $37,000 on the lucky customers, who just so happened to be at the right place at the right time.

This visit comes on the heels of the news that Target, the second-largest retailer in the US (after Walmart), refused to carry the album because it was released to iTunes exclusively first.

Target told Billboard:

“we focus on offering our guests a wide assortment of physical CDs, and when a new album is available digitally before it is available physically, it impacts demand and sales projections. While there are many aspects that contribute to our approach and we have appreciated partnering with Beyoncé in the past, we are primarily focused on offering CDs that will be available in a physical format at the same time as all other formats.”

It’s definitely no coincidence that Queen Bey popped at Walmart bringing tidings of joy and gift cards; this was clearly a move to stick it to Target and show them that she supports companies who support her.
