A family in Lancaster Pennsylvania is mourning the loss of a 4-year-old, after police state that he drowned in a pit of manure on their family farm.

According to published reports, 4-year-old Josiah Martin was playing with his siblings when they lost sight of the toddler.

After searching for the boy, his family found him face down in a partially frozen 8-foot pit of manure.

Authorities are unclear on how the child managed to get near the pit that was surrounded by an chain link fence that is a reported 42 feet in diameter.

New Holland Police Officer Troy Deshong states that the family says he may have been trying to retrieve a dog.
